RUINS, REFUGEES and RESILIENCE

RUINS, REFUGEES and RESILIENCE was the title of the symposium, organized and hosted by the Taishi Watanabe Laboratory at the Department of Architecture, Waseda University Tokyo.
The symposium has served as a tool to shape the ongoing vital academic exchange between the Technical University Berlin and the Waseda University Tokyo, that has actually originated in a triangular setting. Already in 1996, Prof. Osamu Ishiyama and Prof. Gerd Zimmerman set up a scholarly exchange between Waseda University in Tokyo and the Bauhaus University in Weimar that has since brought students and scholars from Germany to Japan and vice versa.
The main guest of this symposium, Prof. Dr. Jörg Gleiter, head of the Chair of Architectural Theory at the TU Berlin, represents this fruitful exchange in person as he has been teaching at all three institutions in Weimar, Berlin and Tokyo. He currently facilitates the chance to extend these academic relations further.
In his lecture Prof. Dr. Gleiter was concerned with a certain turning point in the concept of ruins. Under the topic „On Other Ruins – Lesions, Scars and Memory: Towards a Contemporary Theory of Ruins“ Prof. Gleiter concluded: „We have to rethink the theory of ruins.“ But what could define a contemporary theory of ruins? According to Prof. Gleiter, ruins of the 20th century are mostly negative images – ruins one cannot build a new society on. Within the need for urban scars and the question of appropriate contemporary monuments, Prof. Gleiter carefully looked for a sense of something that can be described as „new values“ for contemporary ruins while mediating between the different comprehension of ruins in Japan and Europe.
Prof. Taishi Watanabe opened the symposium with his lecture titled „Sealand – ambiguous boundaries“. Like Fernand Braudel, Prof. Watanabe does not see a single ocean but rather a complex of intertwined processes, brought forward through the idea of dispersion between the realm of sea and land. In this sense the ocean can't be understood independently from what is exterior to it – set boundaries begin to blur and to exfoliate and reveal a necessary field of spatial engagement within an extended international coastline beyond conventional categories.
Martin Pohl concluded the evening with a comment on both lectures given, wrapped into his presentation „The Political Church – Ruins as Tools“. He presented a case study that summarized ideas introduced in Prof. Dr. Taishi Watanabes and Prof. Dr. Jörg Gleiters lectures. As an abandoned contemporary church ruin, constructed during the war in former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, becomes a legal case, Martin Pohl asks not only for the necessity of a place of collective memory but rather introduces the idea of an ephemeral arena – a space for a productive political conflict, that translates the ruined building from being only an object into being an agent.
The symposium was not only the chance to talk about important and pressing contemporary topics but was at the same time the memorial symposium for the previous and future collaboration of the Waseda University Tokyo (Taishi Watanabe Laboratory) and the Technical University Berlin (Chair for Architectural Theory, Prof. Dr. Jörg Gleiter), which should set the corner stone for all joint projects to come.
RUINES, REFUGEES and RESILIENCE was therefore the first opportunity to take a peak into future endeavors that the collaboration between TU Berlin, Waseda University Tokyo and also the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will be able to encourage and carry on.

ベルリン工科大学教授のヨルク・グライター氏を招き開催された、早稲田大学・ベルリン工科大学箇所間協定記念国際シンポジウム「RUINS, REFUGEES and RESILIENCE」は、ドイツ連合共和国大使館の後援を受け、開催に至りました。
当日は約300名の方々にご来場いただき、大盛況の中閉幕となりました。
ヨルク・グライター氏(ベルリン工科大学)の講演は、廃墟の概念の転換点が主なテーマでした。
「On Other Ruins – Lesions, Scars and Memory: Towards a Contemporary Theory of Ruins」の中で、遺跡の理論を再考する必要性を提示した上で、遺跡の現代的な理論を定義を試みました。
グライター氏によれば、20世紀の遺跡はほとんどがネガティブのイメージのものです。遺跡は、その上に新たな社会を構築することはできません。
しかしながら、都市の傷跡が必要とする現代的なモニュメントの問題においては、現代に残る遺跡（傷跡）は、「新しい価値」となることを示しました。
渡邊大志（早稲田大学）は「Sealand – ambiguous boundaries」と題して、単一の海としては視えない、海と陸の領域間を横断する考え方を通じて、絡み合ったプロセスの複合体を示しました。海は外部から独立して理解することができないことを前提として、決められた境界のあいまいさと剥離による、従来のカテゴリーを超えた、拡張する水際線の世界性を示しました。
マーティン・ポール(バウハウス大学ワイマール)は、「The Political Church – Ruins as Tools」と題した講演を行いました。1990年代の旧ユーゴスラビアで戦争の間に建設が放棄された教会の破壊が訴訟事件になりました。旧ユーゴスラビアの政治的な教会においては、必ずしも大衆の記憶の場所のみを求めない考え方を示しました。
シンポジウムの後は、三軒茶屋のカレー料理屋「ロイヤール・タリー」にご協力いただき、参加者の方々にネパール・カレーと特製のチャイが振舞われました。

来たる10月29日(木)、ヨルク・グライター先生をお招きした国際シンポジウムが行われます。
このシンポジウムは早稲田大学とドイツ・ベルリン工科大学の箇所間協定締結に基づいて開催されます。
ヨルク・グライター先生は、ヨーロッパ建築界きっての建築理論研究者です。ニーチェ研究の専門家でもありますが、近年はシリアの難民問題にも測鉛を下ろされています。
世界でも間違いなく、最大の知性を持つ方です。
